Educational and Professional Background

I began my adult educational life with a double major BA in Philosophy and Mathematics, which I finished Summa Cum Laude (Highest Honors) at Willamette University in 1991. After a brief period of research at the Pentagon, I moved to the University of Edinburgh under a British Marshall Scholarship and completed a PhD in Philosophy of Mind in just under three years, focusing on human cognition and consciousness. Subsequently, I began a Research Fellowship at the University of Glasgow, where I started re-writing my PhD dissertation to turn it into the Kluwer Academic book Mind Out of Matter. I spent another year writing before accepting a post as a research scientist in cognition, novel computation and artificial life at the Complex Systems Laboratory of BT Labs, which eventually became BTexact Technologies.

Over a period of less than six years with BT, I transformed my career by branching out from scientific research into business strategy, applying the same kinds of tools I used in research to address tough business problems, and learning quite a few new tools. Along the way, I tripled my compensation package, and by the time I left BT, I was responsible for a strategic business partnering programme with a seven-figure revenue target.

By mid-2002, the variety of life outside a large corporate enterprise was beckoning loudly. I left at the end of August, founded Mulhauser Consulting, and took some time out to complete an intensive one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling. Now a qualified counsellor/psychotherapist, I maintain a small private practice in addition to consulting and coaching work. You can visit the practice at CounsellingResource.com. Not only do counselling and coaching represent in some ways a return to the human core of experience which originally drove my PhD research, but they have also shed a whole new light on my interactions with the business world. I did not undertake counselling training specifically to achieve benefits in business, but in retrospect I realize that I probably learned more that was relevant to the psychology of management by studying counselling and working in counselling than in any single business role I have ever had.

Side Note on 'Coaching Credentials'

In my view, one unfortunate side effect of the exploding interest in coaching which has taken place over the last decade or so has been a significant lowering of the standards associated with the work -- even at the same time as professional groups such as the International Coach Federation have sprung up and attempted to enforce some degree of quality control over aspects of the field, for example by marketing and selling their own credentialing programmes. Even in the case of ICF credentialing, however, it is worth bearing in mind that their highest level 'Master Coach' certification demands less than half of the actual training required for a basic Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling. The lowest level coach certification requires a mere 60 hours of actual training. I cannot imagine myself attempting to operate a coaching practice with just 60 hours of actual training, and my hope is that actually no one does: my hope is that every coach has acquired significantly more relevant experience elsewhere.

This may help explain why there are no coaching certification acronyms appearing after my name. I do, however, abide by the ICF's ethical guidelines.

In addition, I hold Enhanced Disclosure from the UK's Criminal Records Bureau, a clearance level "reserved for positions involving the greatest degree of trust". (See the Disclosure Service or the main CRB site.)
