Who Uses Coaches?
Although coaching originated in corporate environments, it has long since moved out of the boardroom to benefit a much broader range of clients.
Coaching's Corporate Origins
Since the 1980s, coaching has been a frequent component of executive compensation packages. The rationale for coaching from an employer's point of view has been that coaching represents a comparatively small incremental investment which can significantly increase the return from the much larger investment required to bring the executive on board in the first place.
For the executive, it also represents a popular 'perk', a personal service tailored specifically for the individual with significant personal benefits over and above the performance improvements valued by the employer.

Out of the Boardroom
But more recently, especially over the last decade, and especially in the United States, interest in coaching has exploded into areas which have little or nothing to do with the corporate boardroom. Increasingly, coaching is being used not just by executives but by people from every walk of life.
- People who have recently experienced significant life transitions -- or, just as frequently, those who want to experience a significant life transition, in career, relationships, or other areas -- may employ coaches to help them attain clarity in their own values and aspirations.
- Parents may employ coaches for their university-age children to aide their personal adjustment to university life and to give them an early edge in the professional world.
- In general, anyone who would like to dedicate effort to developing themselves and their own self knowledge, capacity for sound judgement, and creativity and insight, may employ a coach.
Employing a coach represents an investment in yourself and your future -- whatever your purpose.
